The next inductee into the Flatbush Hall of Fame is non other than legendary rapper Special Ed. At the golden era of hip hop in the early 90's, Special Ed was one of the most creative lyricist and performer in Hip Hop. His metaphors and delivery were second to none. Special Ed uses his charm, creative delivery and flow to describe the sights and sounds of Flatbush throughout his career. His Biography is all too well known and personifies Flatbush. Born in Brooklyn, to Jamaican parents, Special Ed was the youngest of 5. Thoughout his music one cannot help but notice the influence that Flatbush Brought. In addition to his performing career, Special Ed owns and runs Dolla Cab Lab, a recording studio in Brooklyn. The studio's name is inspired by non other than the Dollar vans that run though Flatbush. The choice of Dolla Cab Lab was name because Ed believes that the Dollar Vans offers an alternate choice of public transportation just as Ed's "Lab," opens doors for local talent. The Lab reflects his ambition to remain close to his neighborhood while boosting his career, and to make music independent of interference from heavy-handed label executives. The studio makes use of a 32-track digital recording set-up and is frequented by talented young artists who look to Special Ed for not only creative guidance, but also business know-how. For all These reasons Special Ed is our next inductee into the Flatbush Hall of Fame. This Video (a true classic that is one of the greatest hip hop videos of all time) shows Special Ed kicking major ass Flatbush style. This is when Hip Hop was truly great. It should be news to Special Ed that according to certain Real Estate Brokers that the "creative types" are NOW starting to move into Flatbush.

Special Ed is one of those "back- in-the-day" rappers. His videos are nice and he never kicked that gangsta rap garbage. If I lisiten to rap it has to be from the early 80's to 94'/95'.
Do you remember the first BDP album? How about "Just Ice"? And of course Fat Boys & Run DMC. LL's first album is in his top three. Don't forget Whodini. I know they are not Flatbush born & bread, but their songs are tight.

Special Ed went to I.S 246 Walt Whitman Junior H.S. on Veronica Place. What a great video. I remember watching this on channel 31 video music box with dj Ralph Mcdaniels and crazy sam!!
I think most of the boot camp click were from Bed-Stuy and Brownsville. Some members may have came from flatbush.They did shout out flatbush a couple of times.
Another great video by Special Ed was "I got it made" I think he shot that video in front of Erasmus Hall. Those were the days.

Many years back, Flatbush and East Flatbush were white communities. No people of color lived there. When my father (black man from Jamaica) purchased his 6 unit East Flatbush apartment building, all of the residents were white. Also, all of the people who resided on the block were white.
There was a man (white) who resided across the street. My mother and grandmother (black from Panama) told me that he would spend the night sitting on the sidewalk in front of his house. He was block security, and made sure no illegal activity would occur.
That man should definitely be in the Flatbush Hall of Fame. Only one thing, this blog operator is only inducting people that HE is familiar with and knows of. If I create my OWN blog, I would include that man.

When my parents purchased the building I was not born. I guess the neighborhood changed, why I don't know. But the white people were replaced with people from Jamaica, Trinidad, Haiti, Guyana, Grenada, Barbados and Puerto Rico (and possibly a few other islands).
Hasidic Jews also moved in. There is a Synogoge on E. 53rd St. between Snyder and Tilden. Also, a Jewish building on E. 52nd St., a few doors down from Church Ave., on the right side of 52nd Street. There was also a Jewish Center on E. 53rd St. between Church & Linden, on the right side of 53rd Street, closer to Church. Unfortunately, the property was renovated a few years ago, I believe it contains condos. I don't believe units were ever purchased.
