Flatbush still in shock

Across Flatbush - home to one of the the largest Haitian communities outside of the island - lives have been turned upside down by the horrific tragedy unfolding thousands of miles away.

Streets are less busy and people are crying softly as they walk past makeshift shrines that dot Nostrand and Flatbush Aves., gripping cell phones in case loved ones call.

Cafés are filled with anguished faces gathered around TVs, desperate for news of those feared lost. Stores stand empty as familiar routines have come to a halt. School officials seek to comfort students whose minds are a million miles away.
