Sad Story

A New York times story about a women from New Orleans who had a great career. She is now living on hard times. I wonder if something like that could ever happen to our new neighbors of lighter persuation at Flatbush.

You have to wonder why this blogger insists on drawing the color line.

Listen honey chile, my mother scrubbed floors for a living (still does) and her lily-whiteness and limited English never prevented her from getting cleaning jobs in affluent black households.

Most of my Caribbean black neighbors do very well for themselves. They work hard, save money, and try not to get rip-off mortgages. When we moved in over ten years ago, our St Lucian neighbors bought us champagne and chocolates. They have keys to our house and their children treat us like uncles.

Not that there isn't blatant racism all around us. Not to mention homophobia. I've been called a cracker on a few occasions. But hey, ugly is as ugly does. I lived in Howard Beach in the 70s and didn't care about the social climate there either. When I lived in Harlem, Dougie Fresh and his mom lived next door and he and his entourage would be up in my recording studio listening to tracks on a daily basis. Like I said, good neighbors come in all colors and flavors baby.
